This Thursday, a pro-police judge from his 26th Street bench found two Chicago Police Officers not guilty of criminally shooting an unarmed 23-year-old Miguel Medina three times. After being shot, Mr. Medina was left to bleed in the street. He was taken to the hospital, patched up, and whisked away to the police station, where he was handcuffed and interrogated by detectives looking for some information to protect the officers. Mr. Medina was crying in pain, complaining about his wounds and being handcuffed—despite no evidence he committed any crime against the police. He was released after 7 hours, following which his family took him to another hospital where he was admitted. Defendant We believe these officers lied on their initial reports and while making statements to investigators, then were charged for their wrongdoing once these fabrications were revealed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and clear video evidence. Once again Chicago Police escape criminal conviction, but the civil case proceeds. Officers Liakopoulos and Reynoso have been stripped of their police powers and are still subject to termination. The fight continues and the officers will be held accountable.
